Preparing Graduates for the Disruptive AI-driven Economy: Strategies for Australian Universities
- Dr Kumar Biswas, Senior Lecturer, UOW
By the end of 2030, artificial intelligence (AI), one of the most disruptive and influential technologies of our time, is projected to contribute US$15.7 trillion to the world economy, surpassing the combined current GDP of China and India. This is reflected in The Australian’s 2024 CEO Survey, which unveils how the leading Australian companies, including Telstra, CSL, CBA, and Macquarie Group, have been leveraging AI to boost productivity, accelerate product development, and bolster cybersecurity in the face of escalating operational costs and regulations. A consensus has emerged that AI is a crucial lever to enhance flatlining productivity, address the continued economic slowdown, and streamline workforce and operational management. Australian companies have been using broadly AI technologies such as Open AI's ChatGPT, Micro’oft's Copilot, and Google’s Gemini. This is considered a significant workplace transformation that allows more value extraction from workers, automating routine tasks and enabling staff to focus on more value-added work. Australian financial and service industries have widely embraced AI as a fundamental pillar of their digitalisation strategy, improving operational efficiency and risk management and increasing customer experiences through streamlining supply chain systems.
This changing circumstance warrants that Australian universities prepare
graduates with solid foundations and practical experiences in AI for the
demands of this evolving job market. There is a greater chance that leveraging
AI in the workplace will be recognised as a critical graduate attribute. To
achieve this end, Australian universities can pay closer attention to equipping
graduates to be job-ready in the AI-driven economy by observing the following
three key strategies:
- Focus on an
Interdisciplinary approach to AI Education and Research: Integrate
AI-related courses and programs such as machine learning, natural language
processing, and AI ethics into the mainstream curriculum for degree
programs to ensure that students have hands-on training with popular AI
tools, platforms such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and sci-kit-learn. Fostering
a culture of collaboration among students from diverse backgrounds such as
business, healthcare, finance, and engineering can enhance their
capability to address real-world challenges.
- Fostering Industry Collaboration to Enhance Problem-Solving and Communication Skills: Universities can renew their strategic focus on enabling students to gain hands-on experience through active industry collaboration, thereby accelerating the problem-solving capacities of graduates by applying AI technologies. This can include internships and collaborative projects with industry in solving real-world problems across industries, from combating scams to accelerating drug development. To achieve this, students must develop strong and open communication skills to convey complex AI concepts and findings to non-technical stakeholders effectively.
- Ethics and Governance issues related to AI: Graduates must be well-versed in responsible AI practices, including fairness, algorithm bias transparency, accountability and privacy concerns. Graduates should be fully aware of AI's ethical and legal implications, especially in highly regulated sectors like finance and healthcare.
By considering the three strategies above, Australian universities can proactively fulfil their obligations to the greater community in preparing well-equipped, job-ready graduates to contribute effectively to the workforce and navigate the evolving landscape of AI technologies and applications.

Great thought provoking work but needs more derails.
